Hilton Head’s marshes, maritime forests, and beaches make it one of the Lowcountry’s richest spots for birdwatching — home to painted buntings, wood storks, ospreys, and hundreds of migratory species passing through each year. I’m no birder myself, but I’ve pulled together some of the island’s best places to spot them, along with tours and events run by the people who actually know what they’re looking at. - Audubon Newhall Preserve — A 50-acre preserve with easy walking trails, owned and maintained by Hilton Head Audubon. Free, donations welcome.

Tours & Events
Want to learn from people who actually know their warblers from their wrens? These are the organizations running walks, talks, and programs around the Lowcountry.
- Center for Birds of Prey (Avian Conservation Center) — Flight demonstrations, guided tours, and an Owls in Flight program run Thursday through Saturday, plus special seasonal events like Owls By Moonlight and Photography Days. Located in Awendaw, about an hour from HHI. Visit their site for the current schedule and tickets.

🔗 coastaldiscovery.org - Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) — Every February, birdwatchers around the world spend four days counting and reporting what they see — and anyone can join in, from your own backyard. The next count runs February 12–15, 2027.

- Center for Birds of Prey (Avian Conservation Center) — Avian Medical Clinic hotline, answered 9am–9pm Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm Sat–Sun, 365 days a year. Treats birds of prey and shorebirds only — not ducks, geese, or songbirds. If a bird is contained, don’t offer food or water; keep it warm, dark, and quiet until transport.
