My Pet Ate Something — Is It Toxic?

Common toxic human medications: ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen, cold and flu medication, antidepressants, vitamins, diet pills, anti-cancer drugs, and tobacco products.

Common household and garage hazards: detergents, fabric softener, drain cleaners, oven cleaner sprays, disinfectants, bleach, liquid potpourri, lime/scale remover, lead, paint thinners, flea and tick products, rodent bait, mothballs, fly bait, antifreeze/coolant, gasoline, oil, insecticides, pesticides, and fertilizers.

Toxic plants: ficus, philodendron, morning glory, hyacinth, rhododendron, pothos, lilies, tulip, sago palm, oleander, wisteria, amaryllis, and spider plant.

Foods that are safe for us but harmful for pets: candy and gum (especially sugar-free with xylitol), turkey and chicken bones, dark chocolate, grapes, alcohol, raw/frozen yeast dough, and coffee.

If your pet has eaten any of these — or you’re not sure whether something is toxic — call the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline at (888) 426-4435. A trained toxicologist will walk you through next steps. If your pet needs emergency care afterward, bring the case number the ASPCA gives you to the vet.
